You think just a little touch of sugar in your tea is okay? Well, if you are among the many with pre-diabetes with higher than normal levels of blood sugar, you should be highly cautious of your diet and think twice before adding sugar to your tea. This is your chance to take control with a few simple Ayurvedic diet tips suggested by Nisha Manikantan, Founder-Director, Sri Sri Ayurveda, Art of Living. An important point in managing diabetes is to know and understand when to eat and how often to eat. Today irregular snacking is very common. In Ayurveda, we recommend dwikal bhojanam which means two meals a day and, at most, three times for anybody in the pre-diabetic stage. When you eat many times a day, the body secretes a lot more insulin, creating insulin resistance where the body cannot utilise it. Irregularity in eating is another factor that causes Diabetes Mellitus to manifest in the body. Here are some sound diet principles that will keep your blood sugar levels from creeping upwards. Be sure to eat at least three meals a day, along with one or two snacks evenly spaced out throughout the day. When you are hungry between meals, you can have something light like buttermilk or tender coconut water. It also helps to have each meal or snack at about the same time every day. So, try to maintain an eating schedule. Avoid skipping your meals as it can lead to a spike in your blood sugar levels. A wholesome diet that comprises carbohydrates and proteins and lot of greens is recommended. Keep about the same amount of carbohydrate intake in each meal every day. For example, if you are eating chapatti for lunch, make sure that you include some form of carbohydrate in your breakfast as well as dinner.
