Burns caused by scalding water, hot oil and grease are very common especially in the kitchen. And if you are not sure how to treat a burn at home, here are tried and tested home remedies that can help. An ice pack or cold water: ‘I apply an ice pack or put the burnt skin in cold running water for 10-15 minutes’ says Upneet. It helps reduce the pain while speeding up the healing process. Aloe vera: ‘I apply aloe vera whenever I suffer a burn’ says Bhavya. Aloe vera is said to reduce pain and also keep the bacteria out of the burn. Since the active ingredient (acemannan) breaks down quickly, fresh inner leaf fillets are much preferred over aloe vera gel. Fresh aloe vera instantly soothes painful burns and often heals even severe burns with little or no scarring. These home remedies also help soothe burns. Salt solution: ‘I apply a mixture of salt and water on the burn and allow it to dry. I make sure that I reapply it several times a day for quick healing’, says Deepali. Salt is a natural healing and antimicrobial agent that ensures that the skin does not peel and also protects the skin from bacterial infection. Honey: ‘I cover the burnt area with honey and leave it to dry for 15 minutes. I used it several times, and the remedy ensures quick healing’, says Meenakshi. Raw honey has wonderful antiseptic and healing properties. Here’s how you can get rid of burn scars and marks at home. Banana peel: ‘Placing a banana peel on the burned area of the skin till it becomes black helps’, says Chandana. Banana peel has potent antioxidant properties which can reduce the inflammation and swelling. Milk: ‘I simply apply a washcloth soaked in milk on the burnt skin. I continue to do this after every 3-4 hours’, says Payal. The fat content in milk is said to speed up the healing process and soothe the burn. Image source: Getty Images
