10 Reasons Raccoons Make Terrible Pets

Because they are so cute and precocious, many people wonder if raccoons make good pets. My answer is always, in a word, “No.” Raccoons are wild animals, and many people don’t realize it’s unethical and illegal to capture a healthy wild animal and force it live out the rest of its life in confinement. Licensed wildlife rehabilitators like me are trained to care for sick or injured raccoons until they can be returned to the wild. We are also trained to prevent young animals from becoming imprinted, or socialized to humans and domestic animals. However, some rehabbed animals have permanent injuries that prevent them from surviving in the wild. Rehab facilities or wildlife educators can apply for special permits that allow them to provide care to these animals for the rest of their lives. A part of the criteria for maintaining a permanently injured wild animal is to demonstrate that you are capable of providing a species-appropriate diet, ample sized enclosures with natural environmental enrichment, exercise, and foraging opportunities. Unfortunately, people seem to be attracted to rare or unique pets, including wild animals. This has led to exotic animal breeders acquiring permits to breed and sell animals that, in my opinion, should never be pets. Raccoons fall into this category. 10 Reasons Raccoons Don’t Make Good Pets 1. I can’t stress this enough: “Raccoon” and “pet” are mutually exclusive terms. Raccoons are wild animals, not pets, and even “tamed” are extremely high maintenance and require an experienced, knowledgeable guardian. Even several generations of captive bred raccoons still exhibit all of their wild instincts throughout their lives. 2. It’s illegal in certain states in keep raccoons as pets. 3. Housing a raccoon can be an insurmountable challenge. Allowing him the run of your house isn’t feasible, as this little fellow is tremendously destructive to belongings (including door moldings and furniture) and unpredictable around both humans and pets. However, locking a raccoon in a cage, a bedroom, or other confined space is simply caging a wild animal, which is inhumane. 4. Raccoons aren’t easily house trained, so unless you can train her to use a litter box somewhat consistently, or convince her to walk on a leash and you’re prepared to take her outdoors on her (unpredictable) schedule to do her business, she’ll be relieving herself around your house. 5. Raccoons are notorious biters. They will bite family members, family pets, and visitors and their pets. Translation: raccoons are a medical and insurance liability. 6. Many veterinarians have little or no experience treating raccoons, so finding healthcare for a sick raccoon could be challenging. When visiting a vet, you must show proof of purchase, or there’s no way to prove you did not illegally take the animal from the wild. In a speech on jobs and the economy in New York in September Trump offered a look at his philosophy on jobs, it seemed clear that working-class jobs to him were primarily factory jobs. Facing seismic shifts in the way Americans shop, Macy’s recently announced it was closing 68 stores around the country, laying off thousands of workers ― many of them low-paid sales associates, plenty of women and people of color, many working at failing malls where jobs are getting harder to come by. In total, after Macy’s is done cutting back, more than 10,000 people will lose their jobs. President-elect Donald Trump doesn’t appear to care about those workers. A Global Counter to the Global Rise of Fascism

As America enters the Age of Trump, it is important to recognize that what’s happening is not just about Trump, and not just about America. Forces kindred to Trump have lately been ascendant around the world. We see different manifestations of this same ascendant force that has borne Trump into the presidency in Putin’s Russia, in Erdogan’s Turkey, in Britain’s Brexit movement, in right-wing ethno-nationalist parties across Europe (France, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, etc.), in Netanyahu’s Israel, and in Duterte’s Philippines. Trump himself recognizes this kinship. And one can see a degree of de facto alliance forming among the leaders who embody this dark spirit.* [NOTE below] The global nature of this rising spirit has important implications for how it can be defeated. Although each nation faces its own challenges and its own unique circumstances, a dangerous global phenomenon like this calls for an effective global response. Those who face a common threat always do better to coordinate their resistance. “Stronger together” may not have prevailed in the American elections, but the principle is valid nonetheless. Of course, it is also true that, in each nation, the forces of resistance must do the political work of organizing to win elections within their boundaries. An essential part of the battle, therefore, is at the level of electoral politics within sovereign entities. But clearly, the very fact of the global nature of the ascendancy of this dark force shows that national politics is not the only level involved. When electorates in very different nations are empowering such a dark force, something has been percolating in today’s civilization at the level of ideas and passions. Accordingly, it is at that level that part of the battle against this force must be conducted. What is needed, in other words, is a transnational movement to win over the “hearts and minds” of the citizenry of the democratic (or once democratic) nations whose future is threatened by that rising dark force. A global movement at the level of the spirit —dedicated to the values that uplift the human world — can provide fuel to power the partisan political combat against those in each nation who are channeling this ascendant, dark. transnational force. To envision the nature of what is required of such a movement, we can begin by asking: What is it that this battle is being fought over? And to answer that, we can start with the question: What is the nature of the force (or spirit) that Trump and these others represent. What do these pathologies add up to? One might call it “The Rule of the Thug.” I would suggest that the best single designation for this dark thing we see ascendant around the globe is “The Rise of Fascism.” Or “The Rise of the Fascistic Spirit.” (A similar mix of ethno-nationalism, economic distress and insecurity, and an overweening lust for power gave rise to a similar transnational dark force in the 1930s.) This year, the most prolific technology – more prolific than any that I have ever seen at CES — was artificial intelligence. From car and home automation to personal assistants, including robots, you couldn’t go more than 3 booths without seeing something about A.I., machine learning, and the technology platforms that extend those capabilities, like Amazon’s Alexa. So, I asked myself: What should brands be thinking about as A.I. continues to transform the customer experience? As audiences increasingly delegate purchase decisions large and small to digital concierges, how does a brand not only stay relevant, but rise and thrive? This CES offered plenty of clues, pointing out the way forward for discerning marketers. A.I. Eats Search First, let’s take a look at the state of play. As the digital age got under way, being a winning brand meant one thing: when a customer used a search engine, you wanted to be the first face they saw after they hit “enter”. Thus was born the arcane art of Search Engine Optimization. Google quickly became the top of the online purchase funnel, and brands soon learned to massage the content of their pages to make themselves attractive to the site’s search algorithms. That was then. Now, artificial intelligence is creating a powerful undertow, taking us away from webpages with neat rows of link results, and instead making decisions on our behalf using criteria that are rarely transparent. These days, a user speaks to her Amazon Echo device, or the Google Assistant on her phone: “where can I get some good Chinese tonight?” And because A.I. has pushed web pages away and replaced them with natural conversation, we no longer get a list of links to peruse. Instead, it makes more sense for the system to respond with a single entry that it has carefully curated on our behalf. The wide-open purchase funnel has been narrowed to a single point. Clearly, new thinking and new tools are required for brands who wish to triumph in the Age of A.I. A.I. In a recent segment on Christiane Amanpour’s CNN show, Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards addressed the GOP’s plan to defund the women’s health organization. In true Richards fashion, she reminded Amanpour and the entire country that American women will not go down without a fight when it comes to their right to access basic health care. “It’s really a problem when politicians put their politics ahead of women’s health care in America,” Richards said in the segment, later adding: “The access to not only to Planned Parenthood services but to women’s health care is very much at risk.” By defunding Planned Parenthood ― which offers many (many) more services than just abortion ― the GOP is effectively threatening 2.5 million people’s access to care every single year. Richards explained to Amanpour: What we’re talking about now, in fact, and what Paul Ryan — Speak Ryan — said the other day is now they’re going to end access to Planned Parenthood preventive care. That means birth control services, cancer screenings, well-woman visits… As a result of the work [Planned Parenthood] has done, we’re at a 30-year low for unintended pregnancy in America. The crazy thing is, Christiane, about this new effort to end that access to family planning at Planned Parenthood, it is the very thing that is reducing unintended pregnancy and the need for abortion in the United States. Richards added that the women’s health organization has seen a 900 percent increase in women trying to get IUDs because they are concerned they might lose access to birth control coverage if the GOP repeals Obamacare. “Women in this country are absolutely not going without a fight and the majority is with us,” she said. WASHINGTON ― President-elect Donald Trump’s attorney general pick, Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), tried to skirt questions about the fate of young undocumented immigrants by saying Congress should work together to pass immigration reform ― even though he has prominently opposed every recent attempt to do so. “There is not a spot of evidence in your public career to suggest that as attorney general you would use the authority of that office to resolve the challenges of our broken immigration system in a fair and humane manner,” Durbin said to Sessions at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing. “Tell me I’m wrong.” The attorney general is not in charge of most deportation efforts ― that falls to the Department of Homeland Security. But should he be confirmed, Sessions would still have plenty of power to affect immigration matters, from shaping the resources immigration courts receive and how they make decisions to pressuring local law enforcement to assist in deportation efforts. Sessions said that Durbin was “wrong” about what his record indicates he’d do as attorney general, but he also defended his support of limiting immigration and increasing deportations. “I believe the American people spoke clearly in this election,” Sessions said. “I believe they agreed with my basic view and I think it’s a good view, a decent view, a solid legal view for the United States of America that we create a lawful system of immigration that allows people to apply to this country and if they’re accepted, they get in; if they’re not accepted, they don’t get in.” He was less direct, however, about what should happen to so-called Dreamers, the young undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children, if or when Trump ends President Barack Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, known as DACA. The program has granted more than 750,000 undocumented young people temporary work permits and authorization to stay in the country. He killed nine congregation members who were attending a Bible study there, and admitted his guilt to FBI agents after being arrested. “I am guilty,” he said during a two-hour talk with agents, a video of which was shown to jurors. “We all know I’m guilty.” Roof didn’t show any remorse as he spoke to jurors during his closing arguments on Tuesday. “I felt like I had to do it, and I still feel like I had to do it,” he said, adding that he didn’t know “what good that would do” to ask for life in prison. Prosecutors have asked the jury to give Roof the death penalty. More seamless user experiences, faster access, lighter devices, longer battery lives and smarter, more personalized interfaces. CES 2017 delivered these in spades. But for Gen Z, currently people ages 3 to 20—a generation that has grown up with performance as an expectation—it’s proficiency of technology, the degree of its competence or skill, that matters most to them. How the technology improves the way they navigate through life, how they experience the world, and how they learn about themselves (especially in relation to others), is what gets them excited. So, although the parents of Gen Z were clearly a focus at CES 2017, there were a handful of startups and technology reveals specifically focused on the things Gen Z cares about, like immersion, fluid evolution, safety, and togetherness. Startups like SmartyPans—cookware that tracks meal nutrition as you cook to create future recommendations—aims at moving beyond generic advice. Instead, it will learn your preferences, your habits, and your meal preparation nuances to create a truly personalized, and evolving, meal plan. And Aire—a digital digestive tracker—aims to understand which foods are most compatible with your body. And while the concepts may seem simple on the surface, they can help the individual better understand their unique needs and adapt accordingly. Thinking spatially and immersively Gen Z thinks about experiences the way older generations think about engagement. As gaming, media, and social platforms continue to improve their VR capabilities, haptic feedback, mobility, and group interaction will only broaden adoption. Cerevo’s Taclim—the world’s first VR shoes and gloves—and Hypersuit—a Paris-based startup that creates highly immersive software for gaming—both created a fair amount of buzz at CES 2017 for their attempt to truly deliver transcendent individual VR experiences. Let’s hope group experiences are on the roadmap for next year. Creating a greater sense of security Gen Z has grown to expect a sense of privacy and safety. And while we are years away from sunscreen that alerts us we’ve gone over our personal UV limit, some startups are beginning to bring the potential to life. Startups, like Cosmo Connected and In&Motion, revealed products that help bikers be visible on the road, deploy on-body airbags, and alert first responders. And Amazon It may sound like overkill for some, but for a generation that is growing up with digital fraud notices and cars that break before an accident, the ability to add an ambient layer of security to their lives will be an expected benefit of doing business. I Remember Troy, MI 2007, Or #ThanksObama

I will never forget going home for the holidays in 2007. My family lived in Troy, MI, a suburb north of Detroit. Middle to upper-middle class, once home to Kmart headquarters, still home to several auto suppliers and businesses that powered the Big Three ecosystem. Known for excellent schools, robust parks and rec, a sprawling library. But this was 2007. If you’ve forgotten those days, America faced economic catastrophe. A banking meltdown. An auto industry on the brink. Troy, MI, was a painful case-in-point. Suddenly the city started to shutter outward signs of prosperity. The library was going to close. “Troy Daze”, the yearly fair, was stopped. Restaurants, including a relatively new outpost of The Palm called it a day. A scene I can’t forget: The Somerset Collection, Christmas Eve. You know how most malls are steady, if not hectic, on Christmas Eve? I ran over to Macy’s for a last-minute gift. Crickets. In the mall itself: more crickets. This was the newer 2nd mall of Somerset, beautiful and usually full of light. The first one had the Saks and Nieman Marcus and often had fewer people, presumably because it was so expensive. But the second one was mall nirvana if malls are your thing. In the waning light of Christmas Eve the place felt hollow. That was Holidays 2007 in an epicenter of American economic uncertainty. Cut to Holidays 2016. Once you exited Big Beaver off I-75, there was so much commerce in lots that for my entire life had been grass. Granite City’s massive parking lot was packed per usual. Carrabba’s and Bonefish Grill anchored a strip of new dining spots. The new Hampton Inn was perfect for the business travelers keeping the other hotels full, or parents who had kids in the new Children’s Hospital near City Hall and the library full of kids who remembered the 2016 Troy Daze fair, now held on private grounds. If you drove west down Big Beaver you didn’t hear crickets. Instead, you admired the lights decorating the median pine trees. How the heavy traffic and open auto suppliers and the general vibe said prosperity once more. President Obama did this. Others did this, too. But if President Obama and his administration had not acted so boldly to rescue the auto industry, there is no reason to believe that Troy could have pulled itself from the brink. Sitting down to write this, I have a thousand reasons to thank President Obama. Seriously. A thousand. He will always be my son’s first president. That is an incredible gift. I have critiques. We’ll be debating some of his decisions for decades. But my awe and gratitude runs deep. So I will leave it, for today, with this image of the two Troys. One faltering. One thriving. The major difference: President Barack Obama. Thank you, Mr. President. Godspeed to you and yours.

Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for attorney general, doubled down Tuesday in calling the Voting Rights Act “intrusive” and struggled to say how he would enforce the law going forward. “It is intrusive. The Supreme Court on more than one occasion has described it legally as an intrusive act, because you’re only focused on a certain number of states,” Sessions said of the act in response to a question from Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.). “Normally when Congress passes law it applies to the whole country. So it’s a very unusual thing for a law to be passed that targets only a few states, but they had a factual basis.” Sessions added that the act “changed the whole course of history,” mainly in the South. When the Supreme Court gutted landmark civil rights legislation, the Voting Rights Act, Sessions said it was “good news…for the South.” — Rep. In response, a number of states and localities quickly moved to pass voter ID laws and other measures that voting rights advocates say disenfranchise minority voters. North Carolina, a stunning example, implemented one of the strictest voting laws in the country that year. Following a lawsuit by voting rights advocates, which DOJ supported, an appeals court struck down the law in July. The court found that GOP lawmakers had chosen to mandate specific ID requirements and other voting barriers in order to prevent black voters from casting ballots. An appeal over that ruling — plus a similar decision out of Texas — is now pending before the Supreme Court. Sessions, if confirmed, would need to determine what position the United States will take with respect to what remains of the Voting Rights Act. Klobuchar pushed Sessions, who has an egregious track record on voting rights, on how he’d address voter disenfranchisement. He said he doesn’t have a plan, but added that he doesn’t think voter ID laws are racially biased. “On the surface of it, it doesn’t appear to me to be that. Jeff Sessions Says He Does Not Support The Muslim Ban Donald Trump Called For

WASHINGTON ― Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), Donald Trump’s pick for attorney general, said Tuesday that he would not support a ban on Muslims entering the United States, and insisted the president-elect no longer wants one, either. “I have no belief and do not support the idea that Muslims as a religious group should be denied admission to the United States,” Sessions said at a confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee. “We have great Muslim citizens, they have contributed in so many different ways and [Americans] are great believers in religious freedom and the right of people to exercise their religious beliefs,” he added. Sessions could soon helm the Justice Department ― which is charged in part with protecting civil rights and religious freedom ― under a president who issued a statement in December 2015 to propose banning Muslims from the country. Sessions was an early Trump backer and praised him at the time of the proposal for starting a conversation on who should be admitted into the country. However, he also said the then-candidate was “treading on dangerous ground because Americans are so deeply committed to freedom of religion.” Trump has never expressed remorse for suggesting the ban, despite experiencing immediate backlash from within his own party, but he later switched to saying people from certain countries ― mostly majority-Muslim ones ― should be kept out. Sessions has largely advocated banning people based on their country of origin rather than by religion, and noted in response to questioning on Tuesday that Trump has more recently advocated the same. As Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) pointed out at the hearing, Sessions opposed a resolution saying the U.S. should not use religious tests for immigration into the country, drafted in response to Trump’s Muslim ban proposal. Sessions said he opposed the resolution because “it was suggesting that you could not seriously consider a person’s religious views.” “Often, sometimes at least ― not in a majority, but many people do have religious views that are inimicable to the public safety of the United States,” Sessions said. “I did not want to have a resolution that suggested that that could not be a factor in the vetting process before someone is admitted.” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), who opposed the Muslim ban proposal, questioned Sessions on the matter later. Again, Sessions said he would not support blocking all Muslims. But he said it would be “prudent” to block people who say they are Muslim and want to kill others, in response to a hypothetical posed by Graham. “I hope we can keep people out of country who want to kill everybody because of their religion,” Graham said. “I hope we’re smart enough to know that’s not what most people in the Muslim faith believe.” “But it can be the religion of that person,” Sessions replied.

Following a surprise upset over Rogue One at the weekend box office, where it amassed an impressive $22.8 million three days after Oscar balloting began, the PGA recognized Hidden Figures with its third major nomination from a major industry guild, following top notices from both the Screen Actors Guild and the Casting Society of America. The PGA is one of the most accurate Academy forecasters in the film industry. Since calendar year 2009 — the same year the Academy upped the total number of best picture slots from five to 10 (it now fluctuates between the two) — roughly 85 percent of the PGA’s theatrical motion picture nominees have gone on to either win or be nominated for the best picture Oscar.
